The metal universe lost a giant this week.  Peter Steele, frontman of Type-o-Negative and Carnivore, passed away due to heart failure at 48 years old.  My condolences to Steele’s family and friends.  Here is a classic appearance on Jerry Springer from the mid-90’s

Review: La-Ventura – A New Beginning [2008]

amazon-la-venturaLa-Ventura is a female-fronted Goth Metal troupe from The Netherlands who deliver solid slabs of piano-heavy hard rock not unlike Lacuna Coil. Tracks like “Remind You” resonate with pop-radio friendly rock symphonies while “Messed Up” take the Evanescence scorn route with heavy guitars a la Sevendust and keyboards leading the charge. Armed with strong vocals that do their best to support the durable yet predictable musical compositions on tracks like “A New Beginning,” this quintet follows the template but doesn’t demonstrate enough of its own stamp to consider this a must have album. www.renaisssancerecords.com -Mike SOS

Review: Tular – The Truth Behind The Mask [2008]

amazon-tularTular is an Italian act who blend Gothic and symphonic metal to comprise their sound. This female-fronted quintet’s debut THE TRUTH BEHIND THE MASK bridges the gap between Evanescence, Nightwish, and Epica, as each of the album’s 14 tracks contains a combination of big guitars and lush orchestrations to create a somber yet powerful array of textures on cuts like “Fallen Angel” and the haunting piano-led and darkly orchestrated “Dark White Flame.” Fitting nicely between your Lacuna Coil and Within Temptation discs, Tular’s debut has all of the nuances to satisfy fans of the fantasy side of the metal spectrum. www.renaissancerecordsus.comMike SOS
